Jutoh 3 for Raspberry Pi 2/3 is free! It also runs on the Pinebook if you install the required 32-bit libraries. It has been built and tested on Raspbian. Before installing the RPM, you will first need to install the libpng12 RPM.
Upgrades and bug fixes for each major version of Jutoh will be free. You can download new versions of Jutoh as many times as you like. We will sometimes make a small upgrade charge for major new versions, usually denoted by a change to the first version number. Normally this is due to a typo. The most reliable method is to use copy and paste to transfer the user name and key (on Windows: select the text in the email, then Ctrl-C, then Ctrl-V in the registration dialog). If typing manually, please note that there are no letter Os in the key: only zeros. If all else fails, please email jutoh@anthemion.co.uk for further help. I can create a file for you to open in the registration dialog that will solve the problem.
My virus / safety software is BitDefender and it always gives me this message when installing Jutoh: "The application jutoh-3.00-setup.tmp attempted to change a file in a protected folder and was blocked. Protected folder: C:\Users\Rik\Documents\Jutoh 3 Samples. Keep blocking the application if you do not recognize it or did not want to edit one of your protected files right now." On Linux, you need to remove the file /.config/jutoh2/Jutoh2 or /.config/jutoh3/Jutoh3, and optionally, the application data folder /.config/jutoh2 or /.config/jutoh3.On Mac OS X, you need to remove the file /Users//Library/Preferences/Jutoh2 Preferences or Jutoh3 Preferences. Using Finder, you can click on the Home icon and then navigate to Library/Preferences, from where youcan delete the Jutoh2 Preferences or Jutoh3 Preferences file. You can optionally delete the folder /Users//Library/Application Support/Jutoh 3 or Jutoh 3.

Normally you installJutoh to a USB drive by invoking the Mobile Preferences dialog from the View menu, andthen clicking on 'Install Jutoh on External Drive' (see the appropriate FAQ. This installs the applicationusing locations and conventions that differ from those employed by PortableApps.com, and allowsyou to use multiple platforms (Windows, Linux and Mac OS X). But if you only use Windows,the PortableApps.com method may be preferable since it comes with a set of free applicationsand can be used to launch Jutoh as well.
Each of these methods will install suitable desktop entries and MIME types, adding a menu entry to the KDE or GNOME menu in the Office or Word Processor group. Jutoh will also be available by typing jutoh in a terminal window. The application is normally installed to /usr/share/jutoh, and the 'jutoh' startup scriptto /usr/bin.
The tarball method is the only one currently supported on FreeBSD. With this method, you run a script in a terminal and you will be prompted to install either system-wide or locally. If installing system-wide, you may wish to login as super user (type su) or run the script with sudo, for example sudo ./installjutoh.
First, unarchive Jutoh-x.yz.tar.gz to a suitable location in your filesystem. This will create two files, JutohData.tar.gz and installjutoh. Run installjutoh and follow the instructions: it will install Jutoh in one directory, and a script 'jutoh' in another, so you can invoke Jutoh without having to set the JUTOHDIR environment variable. The script will install the appropriate MIME types and desktop entries, and if installed locally, will also add a Jutoh icon to your desktop.
You can install Jutoh on Fedora using the RPM. Run jutoh3 from a terminal window to check for reported missing libraries. It's possible (although currently unlikely) that you may need to install the correct version of libpng, for example.

Jutoh does not add any encryption for Digital Rights Management. By its nature, DRM has to be integrated with the distribution and sale of a book and therefore must be performed by the publishing system, for example the Amazon Kindle publishing site, Apple Books via iTunes, or Smashwords. None of these book submission systems can take an encrypted book from the user, so encryption in Jutoh would be of little use. Encryption should only be a concern if you intend to distribute the book yourself. In that case, you can use a service such as www.e-junkie.com or www.payloadz.com that can serve up a link to the ebook file after payment, from its own servers, so that the book is not freely available.
Calibre is an awesome tool for editing, converting, and formatting your book or manuscript. It is free, open-source, and great for exporting. Like Vellum, Calibre has a learning curve, but there are plenty of YouTube videos out there that can help you figure out this handy software.
Jutoh works well with all the Windows, Linux, Raspberry Pi, Mac and FreeBSD that requires only a license and try the Google Chrome notebooks. If you are using Rasberry Pi 2, you are lucky because Jutoh 2 will be free.

The open source Calibre is one of the best known eBook tools. This free application is not an authoring tool, but a converter. It can convert a variety of formats into ePub and Mobi formats. It also lets you create table of contents and lets you edit the metadata, all necessary to deliver a properly formatted ePub or Mobi file to the bookstore. A great tool, but if any editing of content is necessary, you will need to go back to the original source, then do the conversion again.
Sigil is a free ePub authoring tool. This is pretty much the only application that lets you write natively in the ePub format. It therefore also lets you open an existing ePub for editing. Other than XHTML editors, it is the only one that does this.
Mentioned above, this application can be downloaded for free from the Apple AppStore, but, being a Mac application, only runs on the Mac platform and the resulting eBooks can only be distributed via the Apple Bookstore. You can however export the your writings to PDF, so it can be a great (free) layout tool if you need one.
Jutoh has earned itself a good reputation as a good ePub authoring tool. It is not free (about $40), but does a good job in structuring the eBook, formatting, editing metadata and can export to ePub, Mobi (plugin required) and HTML. Using Microsoft Word or OpenOfficeThe ubiquitous word processors such as Word and OpenOffice are compelling tools to use to write your book. While there is nothing inherently wrong with that, do not expect a consistently smooth delivery of high quality ePub/eBooks using such tools. Conversion of .doc or .docx files have been known to be problematic when using converters such as Calibre. Saving them in RTF first typically produces more reliable results. There are some plug-ins available that allow direct export from Word or OpenOffice, but the jury is still out on those. More reliable is to submit .doc or .docx files directly to bookstores such as Barnes & Noble and Amazon. They will take care of the conversion and will validate the XHTML. It does not give you much control over the end result, but it does make things easier.
